Strategic communications for Redbridge Council

We supported the London Borough of Redbridge on a number of high profile projects designed to increase awareness of council priorities and contribute to improved levels of resident satisfaction.

Working for one of the leading public sector communications consultancies, we were first asked to launch the council's new residents' newspaper, Redbridge Life. The percentage of residents saying they felt well informed by the council, and figures for resident satisfaction, rose significantly during the first year of Redbridge Life, showing the value of the new publication, which has gone from strength to strength.

We developed the newspaper within three months, including creating a concept based around the council's priorities and key messages, engaging stakeholders and partners, liaising with the advertising contractor and writing the first edition. After a successful launch we wrote and produced four more editions before recruiting and handing over to a permanent editor.

We were invited back to help Redbridge increase resident awareness of the council's priorities and achievements. We did this through a comprehensive communications strategy including a poster campaign, publications, intranet development, and targeted media work. We also devised and managed a successful communications plan to engage employees and stakeholders with the council's forthcoming Comprehensive Performance Assessment inspection.

The council also asked to help communicate its annual performance plan effectively to residents. We wrote and produced a Redbridge Life supplement which was recognised by the Audit Commission as a model of good practice in communicating complex information.

We also advised and supported the council on the launch and roll-out of a new corporate identity.

"Tim Smith came to work for me on two separate projects and I found him to be an excellent choice. He produced realistic proposals that reflected existing capacity in terms of staff and budgets. He worked well with the staff in the Communications Team and was held in high regard by colleagues across the Council. Tim is professional, flexible, creative and hard-working. I would definitely use him again."
